Dark Web: Cicada 3301
2021
A hacker caught by the NSA over his ties to the legendary Cicada 3301 testifies in a surveillance court, and describes the twenty-nine days before his arrest: stumbling on the organisation's recruitment game — a puzzle gauntlet that selects its members — and agreeing to play it under pressure from intelligence. He works through it with Gwen, a librarian hoping to be recruited, and his best friend Avi, triggers a mass power outage, and earns an invitation to Cicada's private party in England, where he plans to stop the organisation for good. Except Gwen is an NSA agent, and Cicada's leader Phillip Dubois defends chaos as a way to level the world; Connor walks out with their secrets and turns them into leverage. What the film keeps asking is what happens the day after the hack, when the data is already yours and the only question left is what to do with it.
